After all that

We had a little bit of a wait for the rental car, so we put Eliana to work:

She pushed it around the whole time we waited (the floor was no longer wet). I'm thinking of buying one for her to play with at home! ;)

You decide.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Airport
Murphy's Law
WHAT DID YOU JUST DO? (A 'Friends' Reference)

Or my personal favorite:

Awwww SHIT!

We were leaving for PA on Thursday afternoon. I was going to take the girls and the luggage and meet Matt at his office.

I was doing great. I had all the bags and the kids in the car. The girls both had snacks and were happily munching away in their carseats. And, we were on time.

I walked out into the garage and as soon as I let go of the door, I groaned, it closed, it was locked and my keys were right there on the other side. In the house. On the washing machine. We were all in the garage.

I have been saying FOR WEEKS that I was going to do this. Of course I had to do it on the way to the airport to catch a flight? The airport is at least 30 minutes from our house.

Matt drove home (he works on airport property) and we made it 2 minutes before they closed our flight. Two minutes is sooooo not my style! We ran through security (thank goodness for Matt's employee badge), and jogged straight onto the flight. Our bags made it, too! Phew!

But have you tried running with a 23 pound baby on your back? In boots with heels? In cords and a sweater? Yeah. I know.

Calgon? Calgon? DAMNIT WHERE ARE YOU?

Eliana was in the pantry. She found the graham cracker box and tried to dump it out on the floor. While putting that away, she found the puffs and tried to open them. In order to close the door, I have to hold her back. Not hard, you might think. But then Murray arrived, grabbed a breakfast bar and took off with it. I pulled Eliana out of the way and closed the door to chase after Murray.

Got the breakfast bar from Murray but Eliana got back in the pantry and was pulling out all of Sasha's snacks. Murray zipped past me and grabbed a package of the cheese and crackers and ran to the beige rug. Cheddar cheese on the beige rug! Nooooo! He only got a few crumbs out of the plastic.

Eliana had moved on to the desk drawers.

Hence, the shirt:

And then Mommy cleaned up the mess

And stopped any possible head bumping.

Daddies Don't Know

Hey! MNAC, you need to make "Daddy Doesn't Know/Daddies Don't Know" t-shirts!

For some reason last night, Matt decided that I just had to take a picture of him and Eliana. Together. While she was happily playing by herself.

Yes, this is a time she'll remember fondly.

Big Girl

Sasha's wind down time before bed includes watching a show. Eliana watches a little, plays a little, and gets into a little.

Tonight, she wanted to sit with Sasha on the sofa. She wouldn't stop smiling for the camera!

The Power of Instinct

Instinct is truly amazing. A few weeks ago, Eliana started throwing mini-trantrums. I say 'mini' because luckily they don't last very long. Well, I guess mini and tantrum aren't really 2 words that fit together so let's just call them mini-meltdowns.

How in the world, do children learn to bang their heads when they are angry/upset at mommy/daddy/sister/dog/carseat? There have been many time when I have felt like banging my head against the wall but I've only thought about it. Do children read minds?

So, it really worried me at first because she chose to bang her head on the tile. Very dramatic, this kid! I breathed a sigh of relief when not long after they began, I watched them decline. She only banged her head one time each time she melted. Then, her head banging became head bumping which then became gentle-head-laying-on- the-tile-but-making-it-look-hard-enough-to-make-Mommy-think-it-really-hurts. Gently laying her head on the tile ended up gently laying her head on the kitchen cabinets and then she only had meltdowns if we were close to carpet. Very smart, this kid!

The other night, she was so tired and didn't know what she wanted. I held her. She didn't want me. I put her on the carpet so she could bang her head....I mean...I put her on the carpet so she could read her books. She came back to me. I picked her up and she got down. She turned around, took my book out of my hands and

BANGED HER HEAD ON THE BOOK!

I laughed so hard that her mini-meltdown ended and she laughed with me.

Bubbles!

This is the best bubble blower we have found. It actually WORKS. I got it at Kohls by the registers. It was much MUCH cheaper than this one (and we have a dog, not a cow), but this is the only one I could find online.

Not quite sure where Eliana was going.

The dogs like it, too.

Big Ones or Speaking of Innoncence

Sasha picked out a very cute bathing suit online. It has boy shorts and a bikini top like this:

We took it out the box today.
Sasha: Mommy, this is my bathing suit for when I'm older, right?
Mommy: No, honey, it's for now.
S: But...I need....ummm...it won't fit me.
Mommy: Oh I think it will fit fine.
S: But, I need big things. (Daddy is laughing in the background.)
You know, big ones like you have mommy. I need big ones to put in it.

By the way, if any of you have a very tall, skinny kid, OldNavy.com sells girl's swim SEPARATES! You may actually find something that fits...but not if you don't have "big ones".

When do you tell them?

Sasha was talking about the horse picture she just painted:

It was my horse when I was a princess. Then it died. It went to Horse Kevin.

It's just so cute that she calls heaven 'kevin' (remember earlier when we talked about 'dog kevin'?). When do I have to correct her?

The innocence is just so sweet and I'm hoping that it doesn't end for a long time.

Scare Tactics

One of my biggest fears is lice! Lice runs rampant in Florida schools since it never gets cold enough to to kill them. ***SHUDDER**** Anyway, when I was teaching, whenever one of my students would have it, I swear I did too. I can't tell you how many times I went to the nurse's office scratching my head claiming to have lice.

Ok, so anyway, Sasha was standing next to me after school the other day. I looked down and my stomach dropped. There were little brown and white flecks all through her hair. I ran to the computer and started looking for pictures. I would read something and then run over and search through her hair. Then, I'd go look for more pictures of lice. Then, I'd search through her hair.

Of course, she wanted to know what I was doing so I started telling her about these bugs that can get in your hair if you share brushes and combs with your friends. Well, then she had all kinds of questions so we had a ridiculously long conversation about lice and what we would have to do if she got lice. You know, cleaning, washing all clothes, bedding, using yucky shampoo.

As the evening continued, Sasha thought of more and more things she would have to clean if she got lice. Apparantly, we would have to "scrub the walls" and "throw away the toilet paper".

By the way, it was sand in her hair. We kept the roll of toilet paper.

Yes, she can talk, too.

A few more random accomplishments (after all, this is Sasha and Eliana's virtual Baby Book--so I must include all details)

If you are curious, Eliana doesn't just do sign language, she says words, too!

Thanks to Sasha, she loves Dora or "Da". I love when she imitates me and calls for "Maaat!"

Isn't this the best age?

She also does animal sounds. Ducks and pigs sound a lot. I'm a little bit concerned that "Moooo" sometimes turns into "Moooooom". I mean...is she trying to tell me something?

It's Time (part 2)

It's Eliana's turn!

I'm not sure if I've even mentioned it before but we have been teaching Eliana sign language. It took her some time to try something more than just the sign for 'milk' but lately, it has been amazing watching her. I highly recommend it! No, it doesn't slow down their speech. There are many many books out there. I read one good one that a neighbor loaned to me. There are also good videos for babies, too. Baby Einstein's My First Signs is good and Baby Signing Time is excellent!

The current signs she knows:
Milk
More
--she also says "more"
Cookie--she also uses this sign when I tell her that I am "cooking" her food.
Crackers--her current favorite food
Banana
Help--It's a great sign for a toddler who is getting into EVERYTHING. I laughed so hard the other day when she got her hands stuck in the hole of one of her toys. She pulled her hands out to do the sign for 'help'. She also likes to do it if Sasha is playing with a toy that she really wants.
Please Just last night she signed for Matt, 'More milk, please'. How cool is that?
Thank you--manners, duh!
Drink--She says "Deeee".
Water
Eat
All Done
--She also says "Ahhh" Although, this is also evident at the end of a meal when her cup ends up on the floor half opened and the rest of the food ends up on or in Murray and Dudley.
Baby
Hat

Dog--She also says "Mmmmmuuur" for Murray and "Deeee" for Dudley
Bird
Train--We happened to be near a train this weekend and I kept signing it. She picked it up right away.
Bug
Duck
Fish
Frog
Wind
Trees
Play
Ball
--Her favorite toy and she also says "Bahhh"
Flower
Potty
--When you have 2 dogs who have to "go potty outside" many many times a day, you can't help but teach this word.
Bath--Tonight, for the first time, she signed and said "Baaa"
Sleep
Wash hands
Brush teeth
Shoes

Wow, when I stop to think about it, that's a lot! I may think of more.

Another funny thing she does is when she's tired and we are already upstairs, she will walk into her room, try to turn on her music and grab her lovey, turn around and say, "Shhhhh".

This age is just amazing and it seems like every day she is doing something new and exciting. But, right now, it is bedtime for Mommy! I am very good at sleeping, thank you very much.

It's Time

Sasha First:

During the neighborhood Easter Egg Hunt, I heard another mom say, "Sasha K, is that you?" Sasha looked up and screamed, "Mrs. K**k!" and jumped into her arms. The mom then came up to me later as the kids were running willy nilly and said, "I volunteer at school in the cafeteria. You daughter brings me so much joy every day. I told her teacher that each day is even better then the next." Woahahaaoohaa. I was speechless and all I could say was, "Thank you."

Sasha does bring me great joy too. Sometimes (and thank goodness those times are far and few between), not so much...but mostly all the time, Sasha gives me huge amounts of joy. She really is just a FUN KID and we all love her to pieces!

We finally had our first (and probably only) conference with Sasha's teacher, Mrs. H. It was really weird for me being on the other side of the table, wearing the other shoe. The first thing Mrs. H says is that the reason why she hasn't met us before now is because she hasn't needed to. So bascially, my first Parent-teacher (To be honest-I was really nervous)conference consisted of quite a bit of chatting. Her teacher went through all the standards, testing blah blah blah but thing that I remember most of all, "Sasha is such a joy to have in my class. She loves learning and comes in every morning ready to learn." In fact, Mrs. H said that she has Sasha sitting next to a child that needs help with her reading. From my experience as a teacher, that is a BIG compliment. That's my girl. I am so proud of her.

It's time for some bragging.

Isn't it ironic?

Our neighborhood had their annual Flashlight Easter Egg Hunt tonight. Sasha remembered it well from last year and couldn't wait for tonight. In fact, at lunchtime, after Sunday School, she told Matt that they couldn't go out to eat, "We don't have time. It is almost time for the Egg Hunt".

She had a great time. She won the grand prize!

Isn't it ironic that the Jewish kid won the grand prize of $10? Don't you think?

Kisses

She sure is her mother's daughter. Eliana can't give enough kisses to the boys. Dudley even lets her kiss him but of course he doesn't kiss back (nor can I get a picture because he won't let her if I'm not there). I'm pretty sure both dogs only do it because the chances are pretty good of her having some sort of food in or around her mouth!

I thought I would be so proud.

I did. I was so excited to be a proud mom and share Eliana's beautiful artwork from her first coloring adventure. They, Crayola of course, make these crayon holders for toddlers, Tadoodles! I had the camera all ready, I thought about copying the picture so I could send it to her birthmother and I was ready to run out and buy a frame for it. I still have the first picture Sasha drew of me on the refrigerator. I even have a picture that a former student, Hannah, drew of Matt and me (I think from 1998)!

Beaming with my camera in hand, I gave her the first crayon and she threw it on the floor. I gave her another and she ate it. I will not give up and we'll try another day.

There's a first time for everything

You already saw Eliana's first attempt at corn-on-the-cob. And now for your viewing pleasure, Ellie's first attempt at spaghetti:

I bet you can just imagine what Murray looked like after this meal!

Tonight we are serving...

Maybe Murray should get a job serving appetizers at cocktail parties!

Nice Try Eliana!

Sasha and I were having corn on the cob and Eliana REALLY wanted some. I just wanted to see what she would do.

Nice Try Daddy!

Sasha was being a goofball and Eliana was being a crankball.

Super K

Love this! I got it from superflykidz at a great price! You can design your own.

Occupational Hazard or Fringe Benefits

It's rough being a dog of a toddler. It's so hard to clean up after a professional food dropper. And when things get stuck in your hair...well, it's just not fun.
Or is it? Just for the record, rice and bananas do not come out very easily.

One more

Sorry, it's so small. I had to crop out some people.

Pictures from Russia

...with love? Of course with love! They are for Sasha. Thank you so much S for sending them to us.

It says Krasnoyarsk.

Baby Home

You know, "Baby Home" sounds so much nicer than orphanage, don't you think?

And now the funny part

If you haven't read the post before this one, go there and read it first.

I showed Sasha the picture this morning.

Mommy: Look Sasha! Who is that?
Sasha: I don't know.
M: Look closer. Who is that girl in the pretty pink dress?
S: M's baby sister? (our neighbor)
M (slightly disappointed): No, it's you at Detsky Dom (Russian for orphanage).
S: Oh yeah. I see a bounce house in the picture. Why is there a bounce house there?
M: I don't know. I guess it was one of the toys they had for you to play with. Do you see your friend sitting at the table with you?
S: I think it was someone's birthday so they had a bounce house.
M (understanding she really doesn't care---but that's a good thing, I guess.): Maybe it was. Ok, it's time to go to school.
S: Mommy wait.
M (thinking maybe I was wrong and we were going to have a long, deep conversation and it would be ok to be late for school for that): Yeessssss?
S: Can you make the picture bigger so I can see the bounce house better?

We were on time for school today.

Well, the picture is very important to me and I know someday she will appreciate it, too. Really, I guess it is great that she doesn't have strong feelings or any fear about the orphanage and her time there. She has settled into our lives and attached to us with no problems. That is certainly nothing to be disappointed about.

I can't even think of a good title for this post so just read it!

I am a member of a Yahoo message board for parents who have adopted, or are adopting from the region in Russia where Sasha lived. I purposely joined a few months ago to be able to get more info on her orphanages (she had been in 2). We only got a few pictures from the other couple and Matt and I never even thought to ask for pictures (although I'm sure they had mostly pictures of them with Sasha and I don't think we really want those.) Anyway...I finally posted yesterday asking for pictures or information from those orphanages just so I could have it someday for Sasha.

Another member replied a few hours later:
I am pretty sure I TRAVLED BOTH TRIPS with your daughter and would LOVE to talk more to you...
...I have chills because I was talking about your daughter yesterday - wondering how she is!!
She then said that her daughter and Sasha were in the same orphanages together and asked me to email her.

She also included some pretty specific information about Sasha so I knew she was the real deal. I emailed her and she replied right away and sent this picture of Sasha and her daughter in the orphanage (the woman is the faciliator, Lena). It brought tears to my eyes in an instant. Can you see Sasha under that big, pink bow? Can you imagine her wearing that bow now? This is a part of her life that we don't know. We can't even imagine it because we weren't there.

She shared some stories about Sasha and how she was in the orphanage (a sweetheart just like now). She said that one day, her daughter was crying and Sasha walked over and gave her a toy. That's exactly how she is now with her sister and anyone else who is upset for that matter!

She sent me a lot more pictures this morning. Of course, most of them were of her beautiful little girl but there is so much we can see about the orphanage and the town.

There is apparantly one other person on this same message board who was with them when they adopted. She is in Russia right now adopting again but I hope when she returns, she'll see my post and maybe we'll get some more pictures.

This is why Mommy and Daddy need a Cocktail!

Eliana's newest trick is opening the pantry door, grabbing a box of crackers (her new favorite snack) and taking it over to the table. She then usually says, "more" and I give her some. Or, she throws the box on the ground and walks away. I guess it depends on how hungry she is. Today...she opened the box and dumped the entire thing, crumbs and all, on the chair, with overflow going to the floor. Sasha, Eliana, Murray and Dudley had a cracker fest.
By the way, I was not taking a picture of her actually pouring it out, that was already done. She just thought more was going to come out of the box, I guess.

Much to Daddy's dismay, Sasha talked me into buying her a model airplane. To my credit, it was all wood and didn't require any tools/glue/paint/etc. to put it together. They, I mean...Daddy spent about 1 hour working on it. He then realized one piece, of course it was in the very middle was misplaced and had to take it apart! I have to give him credit because I would have said it was finished and all those leftover pieces were just extras in case one broke! By that time Sasha was playing on the swingset anyway. She never would have known.

I am blogging this.

I took a funny picture of Matt today and he knew immediately where it was going. It will be in the next post!

Anyway, lately, I have found myself looking at everything as a blogging opportunity. If you are like me, and I know a lot of you who read this are, you have to visit the blog, Mommy Needs a Cocktail.

After you laugh a little bit, visit her store, Baby Brewing. I laughed so hard when I found this shirt. And of course I had to buy it. Since that was perfect for me, of course, I had to take a look at more on the site.

Sasha will soon be wearing this.

Eliana will soon be wearing this, although I probably should have gotten this one for Sasha, too.

For Mommy and ummmm....for Mommy too.
