Sasha: "Mommy, put your fingers on your throat and say 'Grrrr'."
So I did.
Sasha: "Do you feel that?"
Mommy: "Yes."
Sasha: "That's your hairbox."

BUSTED! X2
Last night as I was putting Sasha to bed, Matt left to get a haircut. As he was walking out the door, I whispered a quick Bruster's order (ice cream) for him to pick up on the way home. Although she did know he was leaving for a haircut, she didn't hear the ice cream mentioned and we had a normal bedtime.
Eliana and I played a little bit more and then it was time for her to go to bed. As I left a blissfully sleeping baby, I could hear Sasha, still awake, singing in her bed but I figured she would be asleep soon. It had only been about 30 minutes since I left her room.
While waiting for my ice cream, I cleaned up the kitchen a little bit. I threw away a bunch of Sasha's papers from school. You know, the ones that sit around forever on your counters and you just don't know what to do with them. Usually, she never realizes they are gone.
About an hour after I left Sasha's room, Matt came home with the ice cream and I hear a THUMP THUMP THUMP upstairs and, "Daddy, what's that in your hand? Do you have ice cream?" BUSTED #1!!!
So he invites her downstairs to share with us. When she is finished, she throws her napkin in the trash and... BUSTED #2!!! "Daddy, those are my papers in the trash." Daddy carefully pulled out her papers and I explained that it was an accident, I had been cleaning up all of Daddy's junk mail and they must have gotten all mixed up.
Fortunately, Sasha is fairly easy going and didn't punish us.

Thankful
Since I wasn't feeling well on Thanksgiving, I never posted.
I am thankful ...
... for staying up almost all night with my baby who wouldn't sleep.
... for getting sick from staying up all night with my baby who wouldn't sleep.
... that I was sick AT my Mommy and Daddy's house with my baby who wouldn't sleep.
... that my purse/car/diaperbag/living room/bedroom/family room are overflowing with children's toys.
... that I wake up WAY TOO EARLY in the morning to a dog barking, a child crawling into bed with us, or a baby laughing.
... sleepless nights, whining 5 year olds, annoying homework, dirty diapers, and spit-up.
... for stain stick, stain remover, and stain wash.
... that when I got home, I didn't have to do ANY LAUNDRY!!!!!!

Global Warming
Global warming is the reason why it is 83 today, warm even for Florida.
Global warming could possibly be the reason why Eliana still isn't walking. We've tried but she...just...won't....take....that....first...step! Another reason could be that I bought her a pair of shoes a few weeks ago, thinking she would be walking any minute. She wore them twice as she crawled around the house and now her giant feet are too big for them.
New guesses? (Yes, the winner will still get a prize!)
I'm guessing December 21, which just happens to be my birthday!

How many pictures does it take?
It's getting harder and harder to take pictures of the 5 grandkids. Jake does great but he tries to make sure that Eliana and Juliana are "smiling" so he forgets to smile. Kris and Sasha smile if they are reminded. Eliana does what she wants and Juliana, well, Juliana is 2. 'Nuf said. It takes two cameras and many many shots to get one picture that is just ok.
Here we go (these were taken by Didi):

Weee weee weeee all the way home
We're back in sunny FL! It did warm up a little bit but, baby girl WOULD NOT SLEEP!!! We were both sick on Thursday so we spent the night sleeping on the floor in front of the fireplace. It was the most sleep we got all week.
But the saddest thing was that I was sick and had lost my appetite for my absolute favorite meal of the year. I was feeling a little better for leftovers the next day but it wasn't the same. Boo Hoo! Oh Mommy...for Christmas dinner, can we have it again? Please?
Sasha, obviously, had no problem enjoying her dinner. She really wanted that drumstick and of course, her Pap gave it to her. She ate every single piece of meat on that thing. All that turkey with the fixins and she still doesn't have an ounce of fat on her body.

Eliana enjoyed the pies more than anything. She tolerated the mashed potatoes and had some baby food turkey but nothing beat those pies!

I don't even know what day it is.
The bad news is that I've lost track of the days. The good news is that I must be be losing weight because I'm freezing my ASS off in PA! We've been here since Friday evening so I figure that maybe I have lost an inch a day from shivering. Wishful thinking right?
So anyway, in my haste to sign up for 30 days of getting healthy, I forgot about our trip to PA. I also forgot that Thanksgiving was coming and it's my favorite meal of the year. According to The Today Show today, I will eat 5,000 calories on Thursday. Seriously. But then they showed the "average" plate of food for a Thanksgiving meal. There is no way I could eat all that even in just one day!
I have however, thought of a new exercise class. You just need to: carry a 21ish pound baby in a carrier, pull a heaping full suitcase, a carseat, a heaping full diaper bag on your back, and a heaping full mommy bag on your shoulder. Then, when you get to your destination airport, you should walk the WRONG way to catch the rental car bus. When you reach the end of the walkway, you'll have to turn around, with all of your belongings and walk back to just about 24 feet from where you started. Between all the schlepping, sweating, and being mad at your stupidity, you could be as strong as a packhorse.
Eliana has also decided that she would like to wake up all night long. So, I'm gretting in some great butt squeezes, bouncing her up and down on the bed every night, every hour!
So that's my story. I'm cold, I am preparing to overeat on Thursday, I'm tired and my butt hurts.

Day 4--I'm a Laundry Whore
I promise to stop rhyming but I just had to post that one. I started keeping a tally of how many loads of laundry I had done but then I forgot after 6. I'm still doing them. Mine, Sasha's, Eliana's, towels, sheets....
It's amazing, if you think about it, how much physical activity you do in one day. Wait a minute...let me rephrase that. It's amazing, if you think about it, how much physical activity a stay-at-home-mom can do in one day! My legs are killing me. I'm exhausted and really, all I have done is laundry.
ALL I have done is laundry:
Step 1: Go through every single piece of Sasha's clothing. Chase Eliana. Turn right side out. Check for stains. Chase Eliana. Check for stickers. Check for any type of contraband in pockets.
Step 2: Use copious amounts of stain remover on Sasha's right-side-out-sticker-free-contraband-free clothes. Chase Eliana. Dry her off from playing in dog's water bowl. Refill dog's water. Remove dryer lint from Eliana's mouth.
Step 3: Start laundry. Chase Eliana---"No sweetie, we can't play with the ironing board. That's just for decoration." Console Eliana.
Step 4: Chase Eliana
Well you get the point. I have to admit, though, that it is much more fun, at least the chasing Ellie part, than organized exercise!

What are you doing about it?
I started holiday shopping this weekend. EVERY SINGLE toy, EVERY SINGLE ONE, that I picked up for Eliana was MADE IN CHINA! I was shaking my head and sighing so much, people probably were worried for me.
So what do you do? I found the cutest Sesame Street remote control for Eliana. I even let her play with it in the stroller. Made in China. The cute little "Laugh and Learn Puppy" book---Made in FREAKIN' CHINA!
I bought them. I feel really guilty about it but I bought them. I figured I'd be ok with the book, after all it's made of cloth. Of course, the cloth could contain fiber glass or something so I'll keep an eye on my recall notices. I will also make sure that none of the paint is chipping.
I just read in Consumer Reports that pediatricians are recommending children be tested for lead levels at age 1 and 2. I'll be making my pediatrician write up the lab request at Eliana's next appointment.
Isn't it sad that Elmo and Dora can cause so much harm? So what are you doing for holiday gifts?

Day 3---Hug a Tree
I've been wanting to write about this before but I kept forgetting. Since today, seriously FLEW by. I did drink more water, clean the house for the cleaning lady (those of you who have one, know what I mean), and chase Eliana around. So instead, I'm going to talk about how I've been keeping our planet healthy.
I'm not exactly sure what came over me but a few months ago, I just felt this overwhelming urge to do more to protect the earth. Yes, I sound very cliche. I could have just made a t-shirt, but instead I thought of ways I could help.
Call me Al Gore. Have you seen An Inconvenient Truth? EEEK! I started out trying to find more things to recycle. We only recycled the obvious, glass bottles, newspapers and cans. Do you know you can recycle your vitamin bottle? Last night, I threw the dishwasher thingamajig in the bin. I even taught Sasha to look for the arrows.
We now use reusable bags from Reusable Bags. To be honest, I don't use them every time because I often forget them or it's time to restock our DirtyDiaperDoggyDooDoo bags. I do use them frequently and I'm now used to the funny looks I get.
We're trying to use less water bottles. I know, I know, I told you in my post yesterday that I drank 2 bottles of water but they are just so darn convenient aren't they? And, I do recycle them when I'm finished. I also use Sigg Bottles for the girls (Have you read the scary stuff about plastics?) and Kleen Kanteen for Mommy.
So that's my healthy planet post. Now...go out there and do something! :)

Getting Healthy Day 2
So I thought with my wonderful rhyme on Day 1, that I should continue rhyming each day.
Commit to Get Fit--Day 2---I will not wear a muumuu!
How's that?
Maybe I should do a Corny-ness cleansing.
I am a HUGE fan of big comfy clothes so I would probably love a muumuu. But, I'll never wear one, I promise!
So today, I thought of at least 1 thing I can do. DRINK MORE WATER. When I was teaching, I drank a lot of water. I always had water with me. I would even start to feel sick if I didn't drink enough. So this morning, I had one bottle on the way to drop off Sasha at school and another bottle after I got home. Then, I spent the morning peeing!
I walked the dogs this morning and walked the baby this afternoon. :)

In your free time
I don't know about you but I have watched every single episode of 'Adoption Stories' on TLC. I've even seen some of them more than once! Someone on my adoption board mentioned that the Hallmark Channel online now has an adoption series.

Commit to Get Fit---Shit!
Sorry about the language. I guess I could have written, "Commit to Get Fit--You Dimwit!" But that's just not me.
So what is this that I'm talking about? Well, a few weeks ago, I was reading another online friend's blog and she had this brilliant idea that she was going to do a 30-day "Get Healthy" challenge for those suffering from infertility. I thought to myself, "Wow what a great idea". Why I thought that I didn't know. Why I responded to her post, I don't know. Why I'm telling you about it, I don't know!! Now I really am a dimwit because my friends and family are reading about it so I really have to do it.
Today was Day 1. All I did was get up early and walk the dogs but hey it's a start. I really didn't have any time to do anything else.
Oh! I did make potatoes for Eliana tonight. I burnt the youknowwhat off my fingers trying to get the skin off. The jumping up and down and keeping those words to myself probably burned (pun totally intended) off a few calories.
So, give me support. Tell me to open up that new jogging stroller and get it rolling. Maybe I'll start Day 2 with my plans for my 30-day (minus Thanksgiving) challenge.

Too Big for Her Britches

Anyday now...
Anyday now, Eliana is going to take her first steps. She is able to stand on her own. As you can see from these pictures, she can stand on her own and pull things out of the pantry! Must be the slippers. She is holding on in the 2nd picture because she had to turn around to show me what she found.
Want to bet when her first steps will be? If you are right, I'll send you a prize!
I'm going to guess Wednesday, November 14.
FINALLY!

She's Brilliant!
Yesterday, she was playing peek-a-boo without help, she learned the sign for 'light', and she learned "What does doggie say?" Impressive!

Really?
It doesn't seem like it but do you know that this past Monday was our "The Call" One Year Anniversary? I didn't even realize it until yesterday. All of a sudden I remembered that last Halloween, I was telling all of our neighbors that we were going to have a little girl.
SASHA: Trick or Treat!
NEIGHBOR: Oh, Sasha you look so cute.
SASHA: Thank you.
ME: WE'VE BEEN CHOSEN BY A BIRTHMOM AND WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A BABY GIRL IN JANUARY!
We got the call on the Monday before Halloween. I was having my beloved "REST TIME" with Sasha when the phone rang. Gotta love caller ID because I was debating whether or not to answer it when I saw our Agency's name on the screen. When I answered, it was the Adoptive Parent Coordinator. I knew that a birthmother was looking at our profile the week before so I just assumed that we wouldn't hear anything unless she chose us. I kind of thought she might be calling to tell us but in a way I didn't want to know just in case it was "bad" news.
So in my nervousness, I made silly small talk. Our coordinator was sick and pregnant so that gave me some things to babble about. And then she said something close to, "This is always the best part of my job," (this is about when all I heard was blah blah blah because I knew what she was going to say), "You've been chosen by a birthmother." I think I said something dumb like, "No way!" Real profound, huh?
Of course, I couldn't get in touch with Matt. My mom was the next person I called and then my sister and my dad and my BFF, Aunt Laura. Other than Matt's parents, we didn't really share with anyone else because we wanted to meet with the birthmother's coordinator just to go over all the details and make sure we wanted to commit to this particular situation.
Obviously, we committed and thank goodness we did.
